Michael Johnathon has clearly paid his dues. His recent release “Evening Song” features 15 tracks of folk/bluegrass songs written, performed and produced by Michael. He is joined by several other musicians, who help create the “song conversation” that Michael is striving for. “Evening Song” builds the music around the lyrics so that the instruments are telling as much of the story as the lyrics themselves.
“Benediction” is an honest illustration of a prayer that appears to go unheard. Not necessarily unanswered but unheard. I love the strong combination of the string instruments as the song builds to an aggressive climax only to subside to a couple of instruments and one voice.
“Blue Highway” was written by Michael while on a late night flight home. This was a fascinating tid-bit of information as I listened to, “I saw America late one night. I saw America from a red eye flight.” Michael writes excellent lyrics that take hold of your imagination. “Evening Song” is a promising CD for Michael Johnathon.
